Haere mai ki te whānau o Ngāti Tūwharetoa

In 2009, our people had good reason to celebrate the historic Central North Island settlement, which saw $65 million returned to Ngāti Tūwharetoa. Much work has happened since that landmark day and with the establishment of the Tūwharetoa Settlement Trust, systems and processes are now firmly in place to actively improve the social, economic and cultural well being of our people.

The Forest Hapū Cluster Trusts have been formed to recognise mana whenua over our forest areas Waimihia, Taurewa, Pureora/Marotiri and Waituhi.

Just as our tupuna fought to carve out a strong place for us, we must now plan and invest for the benefit of our mokopuna and their future. We achieve this by working together for our mutual success.

The CNI Forests Land Collective Deed of Settlement and associated legislation outlines specific on-going requirements for the Tuwharetoa Settlement Trust as the post-settlement governance entity of Ngati Tuwharetoa, including the following:

• CNI Iwi Holdings Limited
• CNI Mana Whenua Process
• Rights to Buy Crown Assets
• Crown Agreed Proportion

These processes and requirements have a direct influence on the timing of internal Tuwharetoa outcomes, such as the establishment of Forest Hapu Cluster Trusts and the payment of annual rentals.
